Black Eyed Susan Day is also known as ‘Ladies Day’ during the Preakness Stakes which takes place at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, MD every May. Up until a few months ago I had never heard of any of this. My experience with horse races were limited to one of the following: images of ladies in over-sized hats at the Kentucky Derby on the news, and images of horse races from movies. So when the group message was started asking if ladies were interested in having a girls day at Black Eyed Susan Day, I eagerly said YES to the great unknown. As I have shared in my previous blog posts I really want to try new things during my 32nd year and this seemed like a perfect fit.
I soon found myself googling last year’s event in search of outfit ideas, and there was no shortage of inspiration. I ultimately went with a dress I ordered online (and on sale) from FASHION TO FIGURE, a very stylish ladies plus size store. I also ordered a pink fascinator from Amazon. I was not able to really decide on my shoe wear until the last minute. I opted to go with cute and comfortable gold sandals I acquired from Target last summer. And in true form I went with a curly updo. I completely winged this updo and really surprised myself at the results. I will try to recreate the look to share in a future blog post.
Before we were set to gather, the group chat started to buzz with panic. Someone heard on the morning news that you could only bring clear purses into the race tracks, some of the ladies called around their sources and others searched online. But we all joked about making it work one way or another. I mean let’s be honest, how many women have stored something in their bra at some point in time in their life. We were a group of 12 women; we were going to have a great day.
The weather was impeccable, not a rain cloud in sight. We all gathered at one person’s house around 11:30ish am for ‘bubbles and nibbles’ before the heading over to the actual event. She is always the hostess with the mostess’ and even hosted a ‘Best Dressed’ contest with a first place and second place winner. Mumsy even made two stops to acquire clear purses for all of us to use, just to be safe. All of the purses were super cute and found between Walmart and Rainbow. I am pretty certain I will still be sporting my clear purse frequently this summer!
We gathered and headed over to Pimlico Race Course in 3 ubers/lyfts. Upon arrival we learned that the clear purses were not a requirement for Friday, but we were cute with our clear bags anyway.
Upon arrival, we got our tickets, made our way to the tracks and the Deep Eddy Crush Club to get out wrist bands, grabbed a drink, found a place to sit and began to take 1,000 photo’s. Laughter constantly filled the air around us, from our group to the other groups as well. For some of us, like myself, this was our first race, for others they were experienced Cow Girls and they were in their natural element.
There was an amazing energy in the air. Everyone was dressed classy, elegant and even a little fun and funky. From the perfect dresses to flamingo adorned top hat on one gentlemen. Yes, this was a ladies day and yes there were men there; but the vast majority of the people present were women. There really is a different and fascinating and fun culture around an entire day dedicated to ONE race that will last only one minutes and few seconds.
Lessons learned for next year
Because we all agreed we wanted to repeat this event next year.
Clear purses are not a requirement. But there are a ton of cute stylish options if you want to go that route.
Be prepared for the hooves and heels best dressed contest. Remember our hostess with the mostess that hosted a best dressed contest, well she was selected by the local committee to enter in their best dressed contest.
Sunblock. I am all for a good tan, and luckily my off the shoulder dressed provided me with minimal tan lines. However I did get a little red, luckily it subsided pretty quickly.
Get a party bus! Avoid all of the shuffling to different cars and arrive together in style.
The bigger the fascinator or the hat the better. Just be mindful you will need to avoid blocking people when taking photos.
Have fun, again!
